Baja California Sur Expedition

La Paz, Cabo Pulmo, La Ventana and Magdalena Bay

9 days of Sea Lions, Whale Shark, Striped Marlins and much more

Baja California Sur is a natural Eden full of marine life, deserted beaches with turquoise waters and incredible landscapes that leave you breathless. And unlike other better known places in Mexico, this paradise has not been contaminated by mass tourism, which allows tourists who venture to visit it, to enjoy wonderful virgin landscapes..

But the beauty of these landscapes is just an small piece of what this place can offer us. It is in the depths of the ocean, specifically the Sea of Cortez (the one baptized by Cousteu as “the world's aquarium”, where you will discover the authentic secret jewels of Baja California Sur. In its waters you can dive with sea lions, swim with the imposing whale shark or watch the giants of the ocean, the whales.

Swimming with the whale shark, diving with sea lions, contemplating huge schools of jacks, or enjoying the migration of sardines while being harassed by marlins, are just a few of the wonders that this place gives us.

Fabulous

We had an absolutely fabulous time at the Carrera del Marlín with Mexico Travel Adventures! Our guide Guillermo was fantastic, as was our captain. It was an adrenaline rush to jump into the water and dive with sardines bait balls as blue marlins, sea lions and kites tried to feed on the sardines. And when they break the bait ball, the sardines immediately redo it. On our first day we also saw dolphins and humpback whales as we headed out of Magdalena Bay into the Pacific Ocean. The second day we were even more lucky and we found a bank of mobula stripes, unusual at this time of year and unusual to see them on the Pacific side of Baja than on the side of La Paz. Also, we saw more bait balls and blue marlin. Back to the coast, we could see all the birds on Duck Island on the first day and the second day we stopped in some sand dunes and found sea stars. The marlin race is a great adventure and you can’t miss it! ! And Mexico Travel Adventure is a first rate company and the best to use in this and all your adventures in Baja!

 Blue Marlin

The striped blue marlin is a species of fish belonging to the family Istiophoridae. It is known for its impressive speed and agility in the water and has traditionally been a popular target for sport fishing. From October to December, they begin to appear in Bahía Magdalena, Baja California Sur, following the large bait balls that serve as food for these incredible predators.

California Sea Lions

California sea lions are a fascinating species known for their playful behavior and their ability to interact with humans under certain circumstances. These animals, excellent hunters and agile swimmers, are very curious and playful with divers.

Humpback Whale

The humpback whale is a species commonly sighted in the Gulf of California, especially on the Pacific side of Baja California Sur, due to its annual migratory pattern. The presence of these majestic creatures on their migratory journey offers a unique opportunity to observe them in their natural habitat. Although the humpback whale is the most common species sighted on this tour, we may also encounter many other types of whales that inhabit these waters (fin whale, Bryde’s whale, blue whale, etc.).

Dolphins

Dolphins, particularly the bottlenose species, common dolphins, and Pacific dolphins, are a common and delightful sight on the Pacific side of the Gulf of California. They use coordinated and efficient hunting strategies to take advantage of the dense clusters of sardines. They often work together, surrounding the sardine balls to compress them and make capture easier.

Whale Shark

From October to April, the whale shark gathers in an area near La Paz known as El Mogote. It is a sandbar that creates the perfect environment for large concentrations of plankton, which the whale shark feeds on. This activity is highly regulated, and only a few boats have permission from SEMARNAT to enter the Whale Shark area.
