A charismatic inhabitant of the ocean
The California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) , also known as the California sea lion , is a pinniped species that is extremely attractive to nature lovers and ecotourism enthusiasts, thanks to its friendly and curious personality underwater .
Pinnipeds include sea lions, seals, and walruses , and although they may look similar, there are very marked differences between them.
Differences between seals and sea lions
- Sea lions have visible external ears , while seals lack them.
- Sea lions can move on land using all four limbs , moving with agility, while seals move more clumsily, gliding like caterpillars.
These adaptations make the sea lion a fast swimmer and a skillful walker, able to move with ease both in the sea and on the coast.

Food and distribution
The California sea lion feeds primarily on small pelagic fish , such as sardines, anchovies, and mackerel . It occasionally also consumes other fish and cephalopods , such as squid.
Its distribution covers virtually the entire northeastern Pacific Ocean , from the coasts of Alaska to southern Mexico , although its breeding habitat is smaller.
Breeding colonies in the Pacific
Significant colonies exist along the coasts of California (USA) and on both sides of the Baja California peninsula (Mexico) . Thirteen breeding colonies have been identified
in the Gulf of California . These are located primarily on islands , where the sea lions remain year-round, although behavior varies between males and females depending on the season.

Social life and reproduction
A perfectly synchronized cycle
During the summer, adult males arrive at the colonies to defend their breeding territories , where they will mate with several females. The females
, meanwhile, remain in the colonies year-round, caring for their young .
Each female gives birth to one offspring every summer , just as the males return to the colony, and almost immediately becomes pregnant again for the following year.
This reproductive cycle is a perfect example of biological synchrony.
Maternal care and longevity
The young cannot swim during their first few months of life , so the mothers alternate between days hunting at sea and days nursing their young .
Females can live up to 25 years , while males typically have a shorter lifespan of around 15 years , due to long migrations and territorial fights.
Colonies in the Bay of La Paz
In the Bay of La Paz , home to unique landscapes and rich biodiversity, there are two colonies of sea lions :
The Islets: breeding colony
Located north of Espíritu Santo Island, Los Islotes is the only colony in the Gulf of California that shows constant population growth .
Here you can observe females with their young and curious juveniles, always on the move and full of energy.
San Rafaelito: rest colony
Smaller and quieter, San Rafaelito is a resting colony , composed mainly of males and juveniles .
Its iconic lighthouse and crystal-clear waters make it an ideal spot for snorkeling and light diving , surrounded by a colorful rocky reef.

Swimming with sea lions: a unique experience
One of the most popular activities in La Paz is swimming with sea lions .
The young ones are usually extremely playful and curious , approaching visitors confidently and displaying their sociable nature.
It’s an unforgettable experience for any sea lover.
Recommended season
If you plan to swim with them, avoid the summer months , as it’s their breeding season and the males can become territorial .
The best time for this activity is before or after summer , when the sea is calmer, the water temperature is pleasant, and visibility is excellent.

Conservation and respect
Although sea lions may seem friendly and playful, it is essential to respect their space and natural environment .
Maintaining a safe distance, not touching or feeding them, and following the instructions of certified guides are essential steps to ensure a safe and responsible interaction .
Their presence on Mexican coasts is an indicator of the good health of the ecosystem , and protecting them helps to maintain the balance of the Sea of Cortez.
