Espíritu Santo Island is actually an archipelago, meaning a group of several islands forming a single island complex off the coast of La Paz, Baja California Sur.
Since 2000, it has been designated a Natural Area for the Protection of Flora and Fauna (Islands of the Gulf of California) , and in 2007 it was declared a National Park . Furthermore, in 2005 UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site , a title that confirms its extraordinary ecological and scenic importance.
A diverse and spectacular ecosystem
This should come as no surprise, since, in addition to being a paradise with turquoise beaches and white sand , Espíritu Santo is home to an astonishing variety of marine and terrestrial habitats:

The jewel of the Sea of Cortez
The surrounding ocean, known as the ” Aquarium of the World ” by Jacques Cousteau, teems with life. Dolphins, turtles, manta rays, and a wide variety of tropical fish are part of the marine landscape that accompanies every dive or tour of the area.
Encounter with sea lions
One of the island’s biggest attractions is its colony of California sea lions , located in the north of the archipelago.
From September to May, visitors can swim and snorkel alongside these friendly and curious pinnipeds , an unforgettable experience that allows them to appreciate their playful behavior in their natural habitat.

Among its treasures is the Fang Ming shipwreck , a Chinese vessel that sank in 1999 and now serves as an artificial reef .
With a maximum depth of 22 meters, large windows, and specially adapted passageways, it is ideal for recreational diving .
In its surroundings it is common to see sea turtles resting on the deck , multicolored fish and, occasionally, manta rays that pass serenely over the divers.
Hiking and panoramic views
Not everything on the island is about the sea.
For those who prefer to explore inland, there are hiking trails that allow you to admire the desert flora up close and the breathtaking views of the Sea of Cortez.
Among the most popular are the Candelero and Embudo trails , short but charming hikes, perfect for connecting with nature and enjoying unique panoramas.
San Gabriel Bay: History and Wildlife
Another must-see is San Gabriel Bay , an area of great ecological and cultural value.
At the beginning of the 20th century, this bay was home to a famous pearl farm , which played an important role in the economic history of La Paz.
Today, the area is protected and shelters a large colony of magnificent frigatebirds (Fragata magnificens) , known locally as “tijeretas ,” elegant birds that soar over the bay with their characteristic majestic flight.
